Falling is the number one source of non-fatal injuries for seniors. According to research, more than 1 in 4 seniors over the age of 65 fall every year. Often seniors who fall at home have to spent some time in the hospital as a result of their injuries. But when seniors are released from the hospital, they often still need recovery time at home. Seniors won’t usually be able to go right back to doing all the things they did before they fell. This is where home care is a great option to help aid them in their recovery.

Cleaning the house, shopping, running errands, and even just getting around the house can be difficult for seniors who are recovering after a fall. Home care can help with these tasks. First Floor Living

Seniors who have injured their ankles, knees, or hips may need to live on the first floor of their homes until they get all of their strength and mobility back. Walking around will improve their circulation and help them heal. Adding exercise will keep muscles strong and prevent weight gain. No-impact or low-impact exercises like swimming, walking, and yoga are excellent choices for seniors who are recovering from a fall.

Lots of Sleep

Getting lots of rest will also help seniors recover faster. Most seniors aren’t getting enough sleep and it can make them confused or groggy during the day. Sleeping deeply also gives the body time to heal. Seniors should try to get at least eight full hours of sleep. Although nine hours would be even better. Seniors that are struggling to fall asleep or stay asleep may need sleep medication.

White noise machines, eye masks, blackout curtains, and new pillows may also help seniors sleep better at night. If your senior parent is struggling to sleep at night ask their doctor about medication that might be able to help.
