In the U.S., an average of one stroke occurs every 40 seconds. Many of these are initial strokes, though 25% are a second, third, etc. When it’s your mom, it’s shocking and stressful for her and you, but your priority will be on helping her. What does she need the most? 24-hour home care is a great place to start.
Help With Meals
Your mom isn’t going to be able to cook meals or prepare snacks. She might need someone to feed her. You might find that she cannot drink unless she has a spill-proof cup with a straw.
Make sure she has a family or a 24-hour home care provider around to help get her meals, snacks, and drinks when she needs them. If she needs help getting food to her mouth or sipping from a straw, arrange to have someone with her all day and night.
Keep Her Home Clean
After her stroke, your mom can’t do all of the cleaning. She shouldn’t have to live in a messy, germ-filled home. Have a 24-hour home care provider complete the daily light housekeeping chores if you don’t have time.
Heighten Home Safety
Home safety must be heightened to ensure she’s able to move around without the risk of a fall. Some of the things you should focus on include having halls and entrances wide enough to support her use of a wheelchair or walker.
A shower seat in the shower is important if she cannot stand. If she can’t lift her leg high, a sliding transfer shower seat is crucial.
Invest in Smart Devices
Your mom’s hand control may not be the same as it was. She may find it impossible to grasp anything. Smart devices can help her with home management. Smart speakers use voice control to turn on and off lights, TVs, and appliances.
Your mom can have her smart speaker read a book to her, tell her the news, find and start a movie or TV show, and play music. It’s handy when her hand control is minimal, but she’s able to speak a few words.
Schedule Therapeutic Services
Occupational, physical, and speech therapy are all important after a stroke. Your mom’s speech, fine motor skills, and mobility are likely to have worsened after the stroke. She may not be able to talk, use one side of her body, or feed herself.
Occupational, physical, and speech therapists help stroke patients regain skills. There may never be a complete recovery, but your mom still needs to be able to communicate her needs, and therapists help with that.
Arrange 24-Hour Home Care
One thing that shouldn’t happen in the initial weeks or months of a stroke recovery is to leave your mom alone. It’s going to be difficult to stay with her every hour of the day and night, so talk to a 24-hour home care agency. Learn more about 24-hour home care to support your mom after her stroke.
