While it’s not as widely known as other national months, National Afternoon Tea Month is celebrated each April as a means of sharing a tradition that goes back hundreds of years. It’s a fun way to spend quality time with your mom as you try something new. Here are some of the ways to celebrate National Afternoon Tea Month.
Host a Potluck Tea Party With Close Family
Organizing and preparing a tea party can take time, so make it easier on yourself. Invite your mom’s favorite family members for an afternoon tea party. If your mom would enjoy dressing up, you could make fancier attire one of the requirements for those who attend.
Those who are coming have to bring something to the tea. You could supply iced and hot tea and other beverages, but your cousins, sisters, and aunts could all bring things like miniature cupcakes, finger sandwiches, and miniature quiches.
Some of the more traditional afternoon tea items include egg salad finger sandwiches with watercress, cucumber sandwiches with thinly sliced cucumber slices and cream cheese, and cheese and crackers. Aim for classic British cheeses like stilton, Wensleydale, and Red Leicester.
A tea party should also have sweet pastries like almond tarts, scones with jam and clotted or Devonshire cream, and shortbread. All are easy to make at home. You could have your mom and kids help make items from scratch together. It’s a good way for them to spend time.
Look for Bed and Breakfasts or Tea Cafes That Host Afternoon Teas
Search for area inns and cafes that host afternoon teas. Book a table and invite the people your mom most wants to spend time with. Often, these establishments serve pots of tea with snacks like scones with clotted cream and jam, shortbread, and finger sandwiches.
Plan a Picnic
If the weather is pleasant, head out on a picnic in a scenic park. Bring traditional tea party foods, such as jam tarts, finger sandwiches, and thermoses filled with tea, cream, and packets of sugar for those who need it.
Your mom may not want to leave her home. That’s okay, too. Does she have a backyard? Turn that into a cozy spot for a tea party by setting up a patio table with a tablecloth and getting enough chairs for those who are attending.
Arrange For Companion Care at Home
When you’re unavailable because you’re at work, tending to your children, or visiting friends, is your mom alone and lonely? Does she often wish people visited more often? Companion care at home is designed to prevent the feelings of isolation and loneliness that your mom experiences throughout the week.
Talk to your mom about her weekly routine, where she’d like more help, and how often others can visit her. As you get to know where there are gaps between anyone seeing her, arrange companion care at home visits.
